Title: Not Your Barbie

Spring 2021

Throughout history men have given women one role, to sit and look pretty. As time has gone on we, women, have become stronger, more fearless, and unapologetic in our actions and strides. The more power and confidence women gain in their professions, the more ridicule flung by men who fear us, or feel shame about their own place or their own choices. Women in the public eye are of greater target, as seen through experiences with Natalie Maines of the band formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

Are women still being viewed as “precious objects”? Pressured to fit in a Barbie doll mold? Never to be removed from our boxes?

Through interests in repeating patterns, fashion, wallpaper, came this project where the view of powerful women in society is questioned. Through repetition, the images and situations should stick with the viewer, in hopes that they will not happen anymore.

This project won me a Directors' Choice Award for DAAPworks 2021, in the category of Bachelors of Fine Arts: 3-D.
